Google makes Chrome less memory and power consuming

Home

In a long-awaited move, Google announced Thursday that it has improved its Chrome web browser to be less system-memory-intensive and more battery-efficient on desktop devices.

Google makes Chrome less memory and power consuming

While Chrome has dominated the web browser market for years, with an estimated 67 percent of all platforms as of November last year, especially on desktop computers, its users have complained that it's the worst drain on system memory and battery power.

Google reaffirmed that Chrome was designed to be fast from the ground up, but performance isn't just about delivering a fast browsing experience. To this end, the company decided to optimize device battery and system memory consumption in Chrome.

Memory Saver Preserve temporary memory

In a blog post, the US tech giant said it has added two new performance settings to the latest version of Chrome on desktop devices that reduce browser memory consumption by 30 percent, with the goal of keeping tabs smooth. This works and extends battery life by using low percentages of energy.

Google says it will roll out Memory Saver and Energy Saver for Windows, macOS, and Chrome OS in the coming weeks.

Regarding the mechanisms of memory saving mode, the company said that if the user has a set of tabs open in Chrome and intends to return to them later, the memory saver saves memory in the previously opened tabs and stores them in random memory as it happens with cache so that the user can Enjoy an active and better surfing on the web.

Battery Saver Saves your battery

For Power Saver mode, the company says that if the battery is dying and there are no chargers nearby and the battery level drops to 20%, Energy Saver will save power by reducing background activity and visual effects, which means sites with animations and videos.

Google explained that users will be able to control the customization of Chrome's performance, and with the introduction of the Memory Saver and Energy Saver modes, they will be able to turn them off if they want, or choose the most important sites that they can exclude from the memory protection function. These two new settings can be found under the three dots menu in Google Chrome.

At this point, users can download the latest version of the Chrome desktop browser from the official website.
